NOTES FROM THE PASTOR
Christian Voting
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity." -I Timothy 2:1-2 (NRSV)
As we prepare to celebrate the nation's birthday, especially in an election year, I think it is appropriate for us to consider the Christian's responsibility to be actively involved in the political life of our nation and every nation. (Relax! I am not going to suggest whom you should vote for – or against – in the presidential or any other race!) Many Christians object to mixing religion with politics, but I do not believe that we can avoid it. When we give our lives to Christ, we give all our life, including our politics. This gives us dual responsibility.
First, our Christian faith must inform our political action. Individually and as a church we should not be ashamed to base our political decisions (which often have great moral significance) on our Christian beliefs. We need to consider every issue, look at every candidate, and decide every vote on the basis of what God's Word tells us is right.
Secondly, we need to pray for our leaders, whether we agree with them or not. We need to thank God for the good that they do (and even the bad do some good), we need to pray for God to guide them to do His will, and we need to ask God to work in their lives for both their personal salvation and the good of the nation.
"All that is required for evil to win in the world is for enough good men (and women) to do nothing". If we, as Christians, do not mix our religion with politics, then politics will be a world always controlled by those who do not have faith in the Son of the Living God!
